What is your role at summer boarding courses?
Social Programme Coordinator
What’s the average day like at summer school?
The average day at Summer School is always extremely upbeat and exciting. Every day is different whether it is new activities, an interesting lesson plan, a thrilling excursion to Thorpe Park, a big delivery that feels like Christmas Day or even a yummy meal scheduled at the canteen!
I always like to get into the office nice and early for the ‘calm before the storm’ and get my head around the day, get organised with registers and help the Activity Leaders set up for morning activities.
Morning break is always a nice time to get some fresh air and get to know the students with some short games before heading back for our next round of activities.
After this I’m always first to the lunch hall along with the students so I can get back to the office for a little bit of afternoon prep/check in with other managers/emails/delivery opening and any bits that need doing before we storm back into the afternoon activities. I like to get round to as many activities as I can to see all the hard work the activity leaders have done in prepping and planning for the students to ensure an excellent session.
Evenings seem to fly by before you know it, so it normally goes something like this…
A delicious canteen dinner
A big group effort to set up for the Wild Evening event
Evening Event (which I always get involved in as they are super fun)
Pack up and hit the hay stack!
What have you enjoyed the most about working with Summer Boarding Courses?
What I enjoy the most about working with Summer Boarding Courses is working over the summer at a summer school that can really push me out of my comfort zone. The adrenaline rush that this gives you afterwards is like no other, the feeling of accomplishment and pride in yourself is great!
What advice would you give a staff member going into their first summer with Summer Boarding Courses?
The advice I would give to a staff member going into their first summer with Summer Boarding Courses is to dig in deep and get everything you can out of it! Most importantly keep on top of everything to ensure you can enjoy the summer school fun alongside what will be an intense and thoroughly rewarding few months of work!
What’s your favourite summer school memory?
A favourite summer school memory would have to be the lifelong friendships I have made over my years at SBC and all the incredible stories I have heard from colleagues and students from all over the world!
