STEM Explorers at SBC Canford
SBC Canford | Ages 12 – 15
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This is an ideal course for students who wish to develop their English language skills to help them to influence scientific and technological development in the future. STEM at SBC Canford teaches students to apply each of these four academic disciplines to solve real-world scientific and technological challenges, such as in the fields of robotics, engineering, and technological design.
As Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are integrated together in the course syllabus, students will develop informed values and attitudes with regards to how each discipline contributes to the biological, technological and physical world. Students will learn about the dependent relationship between each discipline, and about how the four disciplines influence society when combined. Through this study, students develop their language skills and knowledge by constantly working, negotiating and planning in English and by studying and using subject-specific language.
Each STEM project will ask students in groups to research, evaluate, design and develop a scientific or technological idea or thesis. As the culmination of each project, students will be asked to prepare a presentation and demonstration of their scientific findings and technological design. By asking students to take part in such research and development tasks that culminate in presentations, we will not only build our students’ knowledge of STEM subjects, but their English language skills as well.
STEM at SBC Canford is taught through practical project work, which students will complete in collaboration with their classmates. In learning through interactive project work, students will not only develop their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, but also develop their ability to communicate, collaborate, solve problems and take the initiative as part of a team.
During this module, students will explore how intelligent machines are being used to support and enhance human life. Students will discover the impact of automation on the manufacturing industry, how robots are being used in dangerous environments, and the fascinating development of humanoid robots.
Experiments are key to enabling students to discover the world. During this practical module, students will understand and apply the scientific method to test a hypothesis. After the experiment, students will consider how to produce a conclusion and communicate the results.
Throughout the course students will work together in small groups to tackle a global problem. Students will draw on their learning from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, to propose a solution and present this to a panel of experts.
Modules are given for example purposes and are subject to change.
