Time to Shine Project
Develop your public speaking skills. Share your passion. Inspire your classmates.
Today, giving great presentations are a vital skill for achieving academic and professional success. Our programmes reflect this by having the ‘art of presenting’ at the heart of their content, and allow you to discover new confidence when using English in public situations.
It’s more than just a chance to enhance your public speaking skills, though; it’s an opportunity for you to develop your ability to communicate clearly in English, and share your passion and subject knowledge with your fellow classmates. Through your presentations, you will become sources of inspiration, and encourage others to delve deeper into your subject.
Science in Action: The Principles of Science in Engineering
Introduction to STEM’s fun and engaging Time to Shine projects will involve students utilising the principles of STEM in interactive teamwork challenges. These challenges include making weight-bearing bridges out of spaghetti, making balloon-powered miniature cars for racing, and mazes through which marbles are run. Most importantly, students will learn the scientific principles behind these constructions.

Introduction to STEM FAQs
What do STEM subjects include?
STEM focuses on the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Does Medicine count as STEM?
Yes. Although we don’t focus on medicine in any detail in STEM specifically, unlike in Medicine or our Future Doctors courses at Headington, Cambridge and Eton.
Is STEM a career?
Yes. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs create opportunities to many different careers, including opportunities in engineering, science, and research. STEM professionals can explore a variety of fields from aeronautics to biochemistry.
Is STEM a difficult programme?
STEM can be quite challenging, mainly because students are required to apply numerous theories and ideas; however, with the assistance of SBC STEM tutors, we can make STEM much more accessible.
Even though STEM is quite a rigorous subject, our tutors can modify the course’s content based on the students’ overall English proficiency and capacity for learning new material. At SBC none of our aspiring STEMicians are ever left behind in the classroom, which is something we take great pride in.
What level of English is required to take part in the programme?
To make the most out of this course, students need a level of B1 or higher. Before the summer, your Admissions Manager will send your child(ren) an online placement test to complete. This will help us to ensure that this course is suitable for your child to participate in and benefit from.
Do students receive a certificate?
At our graduation party, every student receives a certificate of completion to celebrate their achievements.
Are academic materials provided?
Our in-house academic team has produced a variety of SBC handouts that are distributed to students.
What do students need to bring to class?
Notebooks and folders are given, however each student must bring their own pen to participate in class.
Is there any required pre-course reading for STEM?
Students may be glad to hear that there is no pre-reading necessary for the course, however it would be helpful for students to continue practising their English to feel even more super confident.
