Junior General English at SBC Canford
SBC Canford | Ages 8 – 11
General English consists of 15 hours per week of English lessons designed specifically for 8 to 11-year-old young learners. The course focuses on improving vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing and speaking in English, and includes project work, so that students have the opportunity to use their English in fun real-world situations. All of our classes are taught using a communicative method which emphasises speaking and communicating, and builds the student’s ability to use English with confidence.
In our Junior General English course, students will always practice what they have learned during the lesson. Teachers will provide students with fun and challenging speaking activities that allow students to practice the language in real-life situations and contexts. Activating language through practice is an important step in the language learning process.
All of our teachers follow a communicative method to teaching English. This means that all activities, no matter if they are focused on grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing or speaking, involve the students communicating with each other in English at all appropriate times. Our teachers use a variety of modern teaching approaches to make sure students have the right balance of individual work, pair work and group work, so that students have the opportunity to work with all their classmates during the lessons.
Each week, every student will take part in a series of dynamic tasks and projects. Example projects from previous courses include making short films, photography exhibitions, theatre and drama performances, team challenges and class competitions.
To develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration and teamwork skills, our Junior General English students will participate in our Time to Shine Project lessons. These comprise a series of dynamic and interactive challenges, for students to complete in a practical setting. Previous Time to Shine challenges include the construction of a working marble run and the building of balloon-powered cars. Through our innovative and highly social Time to Shine module, students are encouraged to exchange ideas, collaborate, show initiative and improve their confidence, all whilst having fun.
Our communicative approach emphasises speaking and interacting as the best method to learn English effectively. Our group project module involves students participating in communicative tasks, creative games and team projects in which they are challenged, motivated and stimulated to use English in an imaginative and productive way.
skills to use English in real-world situations. In our fun and engaging lessons, students develop their knowledge and understanding of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, reading and writing. This knowledge is then activated in interactive tasks, collaborative activities and school projects.
Modules are given for example purposes and are subject to change.
