Our Academic Approach

At SBC at Canford Summer School, students learn by doing. Through projects, challenges, and games, we go beyond the traditional classroom to create a dynamic and engaging experience. Instead of simply taking notes, students practise and demonstrate new skills in a supportive environment that encourages curiosity, confidence, and independence.

At SBC, students enjoy a lively and interactive learning environment that offers a refreshing change from the classroom at home. Our programmes focus on key skills such as critical thinking, leadership, communication, and teamwork—helping students put theory into practice and develop in ways that regular term-time learning may not always allow.

At SBC Canford Summer School, every student is encouraged to take initiative, think critically, and work together to solve problems – all with the support and guidance of our dedicated teachers.

Two students on stage at SBC Canford giving their Time to Shine presentation while smiling

Time to Shine

At SBC, we want students to be recognised for their hard work, whilst sharing the passion they have for their subject with the rest of the school. Therefore, each week we come together and all students take part in a group presentation we call Time to Shine.

Time to Shine is the highlight of the week, giving students the chance to show what they have learned and how they have grown. It’s a fun public speaking opportunity that helps students build confidence, improve teamwork, and share their ideas with others. By working to a deadline and stepping slightly outside their comfort zone, students gain valuable skills and experiences that will help them long into the future.

Excursions

Over two weeks, students will take part in exciting excursions to a mix of cultural, coastal, and recreational destinations. Accompanied by our dedicated staff, each trip includes a well-planned itinerary designed to maximise enjoyment and engagement.

Canford School’s exceptional location on the south coast allows for memorable beach outings, where students can participate in a range of activities such as beach games and coastal exploration. A dedicated outdoor experience day also provides opportunities for adventure-based challenges and team-building in a natural setting.

These excursions offer a balance of cultural enrichment, outdoor fun, and relaxation, ensuring a rewarding and varied experience for every student.

Accommodation

At Canford Summer School, all students reside in purpose-built boarding houses divided into male and female accommodation.

Canford School

Our boarding houses are modern, comfortable, and well looked after. Students stay in single, double, or small dorm rooms with shared bathrooms, plus spacious common rooms where they can relax, watch a film, or play games like pool and table tennis. Each room also has a desk and a small wardrobe for hanging clothes.

Students live in one of five boarding houses, where they build strong friendships that often last well beyond the summer. Our dedicated House Parents and supportive house teams help create a welcoming community that makes these bonds possible.

What level of English do I need to study at SBC Canford Summer School?

At Canford Summer School, we offer classes to suit all levels of English, from beginners to B2 level and above. However, for some subjects, a minimum level is required to ensure that all students can fully benefit from the programme.

Before the summer, we send an online test for students to complete. We will use the results to confirm their suitability for the course. In the case that a student does not meet the required level on the test, we will conduct an academic consultation to assess the next best step.

How safe are the students at SBC Canford?

We have a high ratio of staff to students throughout the summer. At each Campus, we have a Welfare Manager, who oversees the welfare and safety of the students and would deal with any pastoral issues. We also have several Houseparents, who are responsible for the day-to-day care of the students and are the first point of contact if any student feels as though they are upset in any way. Alongside these members of staff, all employees are trained before the summer in Safeguarding and many of the staff are trained in giving First Aid. There will also be a dedicated Admissions Manager for each Campus, who will be the main point of contact for families with any issues or concerns.

Our friendly and supportive staff team are available 24 hours per day to support students. We pride ourselves on offering the best possible care to students, and achieved British Council area of strength in ‘care of students’ and ‘safeguarding under 18s’.

Does SBC Canford offer scholarships?

To support our vision of ‘uniting the cultures of the world through education,’ SBC Canford offers an annual international summer school scholarship programme. This initiative is designed to assist students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend summer school in the UK.

Summer Boarding Courses offers fully funded scholarships to students aged 11-17 who need financial aid.

Do the students get free time?

During some off-site activities, students aged 12 and over are permitted ‘free time’ where they can independently explore a designated area in groups of at least three, for a set amount of time. Students must have consent from their parents/guardians to be allowed unsupervised free time.

If a student is aged under 12, or if they do not have parental consent, they must stay supervised by a staff member at all times. Supervision of under 12s during free time will be in line with designated off-site ratios and a minimum of one staff member per group, as per the SBC Safeguarding Policy.

What support and welfare measures does SBC Canford have?

The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. All staff, volunteers, and visitors follow our strict Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, and every team member receives thorough training to ensure students feel safe, supported, and respected. Students stay in secure, comfortable boarding houses, each managed by a dedicated House Parent and a team of residential staff. Our staff are available around the clock to provide care and high-quality pastoral support, giving parents complete peace of mind.

WIll I recieve a certificate?

Yes. After successfully finishing the course, students receive a certificate of completion. This will be awarded during a special celebration ceremony, where students and teachers come together to celebrate the achievements of each individual.

Students will also receive a report from their teacher detailing their academic progress and overall effort on the course. In addition, the report will offer potential areas for further development and learning, to ensure future success.
