Step into the outdoors and take on a programme designed to build confidence, teamwork and practical skills through adventure along the coastline and on the water. The Land & Wave Academy gives students the chance to try a range of outdoor and water-based activities in a supportive, guided environment.

Each optional extra at Canford is priced per week and takes place across two days, with a three-hour session on each day. Across the programme, students experience a variety of activities that may include stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking, Jumbo SUP, beach games and crabbing. Sessions are designed to introduce students to new challenges while helping them feel comfortable and capable in an outdoor setting.

Through these activities, students develop practical outdoor and water skills while improving balance, coordination and overall fitness. Working together in small groups encourages clear communication and teamwork, while the changing conditions of the coastline naturally build resilience and confidence.

Alongside the adventure, students also learn about safety and responsible behaviour in outdoor environments. The programme encourages respect for the natural surroundings while giving students the chance to think independently, solve problems and support one another during hands-on challenges.

The Tennis Academy offers a focused programme designed to strengthen technique, improve match awareness and build confidence on court. Through structured coaching sessions and match play, students develop their skills in a supportive environment that encourages both individual progress and teamwork.

Students work on refining core tennis techniques, including strokes, serves and volleys, while gaining a deeper understanding of positioning, tactics and match strategy. Sessions combine drills, practice rallies and match scenarios, helping students build confidence under pressure and develop the mental resilience needed during competitive play.

Alongside technical development, the programme places strong emphasis on physical performance. Students improve agility, strength and endurance through tennis-specific movement and conditioning exercises. Doubles games and group sessions also encourage communication, teamwork and awareness on court, while reinforcing the importance of sportsmanship, effort and respect for opponents.

Coaching is led by Brett Townsend, Head of Tennis at Canford, who brings more than 30 years of coaching experience across all levels of the game. Over the course of his career, Brett has coached players from complete beginners through to world-ranked junior and senior competitors, giving him a deep understanding of both long-term player development and high-performance tennis.

Alongside his role at Canford, Brett serves as Head Tennis Coach for the Royal Navy Men’s and Ladies teams, leading and developing players competing at the highest level of service sport. In recognition of his contribution to the sport, he was awarded Dorset’s Tennis Coach of the Year in 2025 at the LTA Tennis Awards, having previously received the same honour in 2018. His experience, passion and proven coaching record make him a highly respected figure within the tennis community.

The Tennis Academy gives students the opportunity to develop their game, build confidence on court and experience professional-level coaching within Canford’s outstanding sporting facilities.

An energetic football programme where students develop their technical ability, match awareness and confidence through structured coaching and guided games. The Football Academy combines skill development with match play, giving students the chance to improve their game while enjoying the pace and excitement of being on the pitch.

Sessions focus on developing the core fundamentals of football, including passing, shooting and dribbling. Through drills, small-sided games and match situations, students build confidence while learning how to respond to the challenges that arise during play. The programme encourages resilience and positive decision-making as students adapt to different scenarios on the pitch.

Alongside technical training, students work on improving their overall physical performance. Activities help develop speed, coordination and football-specific fitness, supporting better movement and control during matches.

Teamwork sits at the centre of the experience. Students learn to communicate clearly with teammates, understand positioning and work together during both training exercises and competitive games. The programme also reinforces the importance of fair play, discipline and respect for others on and off the pitch.

Through regular match scenarios, students are encouraged to think independently, make quick decisions and take responsibility for their role within the team, helping them grow in confidence as players while enjoying the energy and camaraderie of the game.

Spend time in the saddle and experience the rewarding connection between rider and horse. The Horse Riding Academy gives students the chance to develop practical riding skills while learning how to care for horses in a supportive, professionally coached environment.

Students ride for one hour each day across two sessions. One day focuses on a lesson in the arena, developing technique, balance and control, while the other takes students out on a forest ride, experiencing riding beyond the arena. Across the two sessions, students experience a mix of arena, track and forest riding. Groups are organised according to previous experience, allowing every rider to progress at a pace suited to their ability. All sessions are led by qualified British Horse Society coaches, who guide students through exercises and rides appropriate to each rider’s level.

Beyond time in the saddle, students also take part in structured horse care activities. Under the guidance of the coaches, they spend time with the ponies and horses learning practical skills around grooming, preparation and stable routines. This hands-on element helps students understand the responsibility and trust involved in working with horses while building confidence in a safe, supportive and enjoyable environment.

Throughout the programme, students strengthen balance, coordination and posture while developing control at different riding gaits. They gain confidence handling horses, learn to work as a team during lessons and stable duties, and build independence through practical, problem-solving activities around the stables. The experience also introduces important aspects of horse care, safety and environmental responsibility.

At the end of their second day, each student receives a certificate and rosette to recognise their participation and progress.
