SUMMER BOARDING COURSES
Answering Your Most Common Summer Camp Questions
When considering a summer camp for your child, it’s natural to have questions about what to expect. From understanding the various camp activities to ensuring your child’s safety, we cover all aspects to help you make an informed decision. At Summer Boarding Courses (SBC), we aim to provide all the information you need to make the best decision. Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about our summer programmes to help guide you.
1. Why should I choose Summer Boarding Courses?
SBC is consistently ranked as the UK’s number one multi-campus summer school provider. We have welcomed over 15,800 students from 152 countries and pride ourselves on delivering an enriching, educational experience in a diverse and inclusive environment. As a leading camp provider, SBC ensures a safe and supportive environment for all students. Our courses are designed to foster personal growth, academic achievement, and global citizenship, giving students the tools to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
Our commitment to safety, high-quality education, and a truly international experience sets us apart from other summer school providers. By choosing SBC, you’re ensuring that your child will have an unforgettable, transformative summer. To learn more, visit our Why Choose SBC Summer Schools page.
2. Will my child be safe at your camp?
Safety is our top priority at SBC. Our camp director oversees all operations and is a reliable point of contact for any emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of all students. We have a dedicated welfare team at each camp, trained to look after students’ physical and emotional well-being. Our staff are fully vetted and trained to deal with all kinds of situations, and we maintain a high staff-to-student ratio to ensure constant supervision. Moreover, all our camps are held in secure, safe locations, in some of the most renowned and safest cities in the UK.
We take extra steps to ensure the safety of our international students, ensuring that they are in a supportive environment, with staff available 24/7 to provide care.
3. How much English will my child speak?
Our programmes are designed to immerse students in an English-speaking environment. Students are required to speak English at all times while on campus. This helps them practise their language skills in both formal learning settings and during social activities, such as excursions and group projects.
Our goal is to create an environment where students feel confident using English not just in the classroom but in their daily interactions with peers from around the world. This level of immersion greatly enhances their fluency and confidence in the language. Visit our Courses page to learn more about our English programmes.
4. Are your courses good value for money?
The cost of our courses reflects the exceptional quality we offer. SBC runs its summer programmes in world-class facilities, including some of the UK’s most prestigious academic institutions like Oxford University, making it an exceptional academic camp experience. While the majority of our staff are traditionally qualified teachers or university lecturers, others may be experienced tutors or postgraduate students with specialised expertise, and we maintain a high staff-to-student ratio to ensure personalised care and attention.
The fees cover more than just lessons—your child’s accommodation, meals, activities, excursions, and 24/7 pastoral care are all included. This comprehensive package ensures that every aspect of your child’s experience is catered for, allowing them to focus on learning and making the most of their time with us. 5. What will you do to ensure my child spends time with students of different nationalities, not just their own?
At SBC, we pride ourselves on fostering a diverse, international environment. Our courses attract students from over 155 different nationalities in any year, creating a truly multicultural experience. Students often form lasting relationships with their camp friends, creating a network of international connections that extend beyond the camp experience. To ensure that students broaden their horizons and form friendships across nationalities, we employ a 15% nationality cap. We do this with the aim to make sure that no single nationality dominates the student body, promoting more interaction between students from various cultures.
We possible we also assign students from different nationalities to share rooms or participate in group activities together. This not only encourages them to speak English but also helps them learn from each other’s unique cultural perspectives. Our diverse community is one of the reasons so many parents choose SBC, as it offers students the opportunity to build lifelong, international friendships.
6. I can’t afford the fees, are there any discounts available?
We understand that affordability is an important factor for many families, which is why we offer several discount options to make our courses more accessible. This includes Early Bird discount for those who book their place in advance, and our Returner discount which rewards families who have attended SBC before. Additionally, we offer a referral scheme, where families can receive £200 off for every new student they refer to us.
7. How do your courses help with university applications?
While we do not offer formal university credits, our college courses are designed to give students a pre-university experience that will enhance their university applications. Students receive a certificate of completion and a letter of reference from our academic team, which can be used to support their future applications.
In addition, our courses provide students with key university preparation skills, such as independent learning, critical thinking, and time management. These are vital skills that universities look for in applicants. Our programmes at Oxford and Cambridge offer a taste of what it’s like to study at prestigious institutions, helping students stand out in their university applications. Learn more about our Oxford College Summer School and Dukes Cambridge Summer School offerings.
8. Why do prices differ across your campuses
The price difference between our Oxford College and Dukes Cambridge summer programmes reflects the distinct experiences each location offers. Our Oxford College courses are hosted at Oxford University College campuses, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world, where students can immerse themselves in the historic and inspiring atmosphere of a world-leading university.
On the other hand, Dukes Cambridge is held at Sancton Wood School in Cambridge, a well-respected independent school but not part of Cambridge University. This is why the cost of the Dukes Cambridge programme is lower. Both programmes offer high-quality education, but the difference in venue contributes to the price variation.
9. My child has never been away from home—what will you do to support them?
We understand that attending summer camp can be a big step, especially for children who have never been away from home. Attending an overnight camp can be a significant step for children, and we ensure they are well-supported throughout their stay. To help with this transition, we have a dedicated Welfare Manager at every camp whose role is to support students through any feelings of homesickness. Our camp staff are trained to offer comfort and guidance, and they are available 24 hours a day to assist students with any needs.
In addition, we have structured activities and social events that help students quickly make friends and feel part of the community. With a warm, supportive environment and constant staff presence, we aim to make students feel safe, comfortable, and cared for throughout their stay.
10. My child has a specific dietary requirement. Can you cater for them?
We endeavour to cater to all types of dietary requirements, including allergies, religious requirements, and specific nutritional needs. Whether your child is vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or has other dietary restrictions, our kitchens are equipped to accommodate them. We work closely with parents before the start of the course to ensure all dietary needs are communicated and met, so you can feel confident that your child will be well cared for.
11. I can’t travel with my child to the UK, can they still come?
Absolutely. We offer a comprehensive transfer service where our dedicated staff meet students at the airport or train station and ensure they safely arrive at their summer school. This service is available for both arrivals and departures, providing peace of mind for parents who cannot travel with their children. Our team is experienced in welcoming international students and ensuring a smooth transition from travel to camp.
For more information on our transfer service, feel free to contact our admissions team or refer to our transfer information page.
- I’m worried my child will miss me, can I contact or visit them?
We understand that your child attending Summer School can be an anxious time for parents and Summer Boarding Courses provides ongoing support. Your Admissions Manager will remain accessible via email or phone, ensuring parents can stay connected. We encourage students to call home regularly, and a daily blog with updates and photos will offer additional insight into the day-to-day life at Summer School. Full details of this support can be found in the ‘Keeping in Contact’ section of the Parent Welcome Pack which you will receive before arrival. Parents can contact their children at specified times, and we also welcome visits. If you would like to visit your child, we ask for at least 24 hours’ notice to arrange the visit and ensure everything runs smoothly.
Our camps are designed to help students build confidence and independence, but we understand how important it is for them to feel connected to home. Rest assured, you will always be able to check in on your child’s well-being.
13. Do my children have to stay at camp or can they join as non-residential students?
At Summer Boarding Courses (SBC), we welcome both residential and non-residential students across all our camps. For those preferring to join as non-residential students, parents will need to arrange daily transportation and be dropped off and collected by a responsible adult over the age of 18, following the sign-in and sign-out procedure, ensuring that students are dropped off and picked up at the designated times. This option provides flexibility for families who live nearby or prefer their children to stay off-site.
A popular choice for non-residential students is our Day Camps, designed for children aged 6–12. These camps offer an exciting mix of academic and multi-activity programmes, providing a fun, educational experience without the need for overnight stays. Day Camp students enjoy all the activities and learning opportunities available to residential students, from interactive English lessons to sports and creative arts, ensuring a fully immersive camp experience during the day. For more details on our Day Camps, visit our Day Camps page.
